Confusing bloat with functionality is a bad thing me thinks. Why remove it when someone will just request a modification for it anyway because it lacks features?

Perfectly stated. Never understood this desire to wanna remove things. Typically things are improved and or added to not removed.

Yep, I still stand by my idea of improving it by having a list of attachments when you click it. Certainly better than getting rid of it, and it'd be a really nice new feature. Each entry on the list could link to the post with the attachment itself, or it'd be great to actually download direct from the list. I'm thinking something like the FF download window.

So then in that case, it may be of more use to have a preview of the post or a link to the post that the attachment belongs to, right?

Rather than blatantly copy what we've seen somewhere else, why not improve on it?

Well, I am just showing you what "has been" done with it. Both vBulletin and IPB have something similar.
How to improve on it is up to you guys & gals.

How about having that info pop up via mouseover instead of having to Click it as you do with IPB/vB? Sorta like the tooltip preview thread plugin?

That's a good idea, but it still wouldn't give you a convenient way to download them all in one place....
